Book of Death

Inspiration for the style of the book was drawn from Victorian era journals. The leather binding, black embossing on the front cover, and delicate paper selection work together to create a sense that this work is precious and unique. A photographic box with a grass cover and dirt as the base was created to contain the book, suggesting that the book itself is like a coffin or time capsule that must be unburied. Further homage is paid to the Victorian time period through the type face of Garamond Old Style, which simulates the inconsistencies of traditional letter-press printing. In order to create an authentic illustration style, all of the ink drawings in the book were done by hand, using an archaic quill pen and black India ink. The illustrations themselves are modern, cartoon-like, and geared towards comedic effect, achieving a cohesive blend between old technique and modern sentiment. In this way, the timeless topic of death is presented through a visual motif that is both appropriately subdued and whimsically tongue-in-cheek.
